Medical Ozone Application in the treatment of Herniated Cervical and Lumbar Disc
Overview Cervical and Lumbar Disc Herniation is a common and frequently-occurring disease. It`s indicated in domestic and overseas research data that 50%-60% people suffered from lumbocrural pain during different periods of their lives and about 20% of outpatients with lumbocrural pain caused by lumbar disc herniation. Thus, it is estimated that there are tens of millions of patients of herniated lumbar disc in China, 3 million cases or so to be increased every year. Orthodox medical treatments are conservative ones, including traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy, cheirapsis, traction, small needle-knife, sacral canal injection and so on. Mechanical intervertebral disc discectomy - clamping, dissection and suction, laser ablation, diskoscope, plasma cutter are kind of physical eradication, but the operation will destroy human tissue, and patients have to bear long convalescence and great pain, even the risk of infection, adhesion, nerve root injury, unstable spine and other complications easily occurred after surgery. Don't mention the expensive cost. The reasons above restrict the acceptence of such invasive therapy for general patients.
Beginning from 1960s, the minimally invasive treatments were introduced to cure lumbar disc herniation, including papain and collagenase injection technology earlier, percutaneous nucleus pulposus removal by clamping in 1970s in Japan, dissection and suction and laser ablation in 1980s in US which developed minimally invasive treatment greatly. Principle of Medical Ozone in the Treatment of Cervical and Lumbar Disc Herniation
Ozone (O3) consists of three oxygen atoms. It is a kind of strong oxidant, with about 20 minutes of half-life period under normal temperature, easy to be decomposed and dissolved in water with anti-inflammation and analgesic effect. Injecting it into the herniated nucleus pulposus inside which the proteoglycan shall be ozonated and denaturalized, so the osmotic pressure of nucleus pulposus cannot be kept and the nucleus pulposus oppressing the nerve root loses moisture and shrinks, thereby the pressure in the intervertebral disk is reduced and the purpose to relieve the pain resulted from herniated intervertebral disc is achieved.
